Hannah Morrison - Violin Tutor

Artist bio photo.JPG

Hello all! I am a piano, violin and music composition instructor based in Glasgow. With over 8 years of private music instruction experience coupled with a varied, relevant skillset, I aim to provide a student-centred approach to creative music-making. I possess extensive experience, educating a diverse range of students with contrasting aims, milestones and goals. Throughout my career as a private music tutor, I have aided students who; had just started their journey with an instrument, wanted to be introduced to a particular skill/music software such as aural transcription/DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), required additional support in order to consolidate the SQA Music syllabus or wished to improve their technical rigour on their principal instrument. Across all my teaching, I offer instruction, guidance and direction to provide structure to an individuals’ overall learning.

About Me

From an early age, I enjoyed music and situating myself around music. This joy of music led me to start piano lessons at the age of 7, resulting in an audition and subsequent enrolment at The City of Edinburgh Music School. At this school, I received an enriching, multidisciplinary education, leaving with ABRSM Grade 8 qualifications in Violin, Piano, Music Theory and General Musicianship. After concluding my secondary school studies, I pursued a Joint-Honours in BMus Violin and Composition at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. During my time at RCS, I engaged with specialised training opportunities with Drake Music Scotland, Red Note Ensemble and Paragon. After a period of self-reflection, re-evaluating my relationship to both disciplines, I graduated with a Bachelor in Music Composition. I stay involved with my principal instrument through participating in orchestras (Kelvin Ensemble, NYOS, etc.), performing contemporary works including electronic manipulation and jamming with my musically-inclined friends.

Teaching Style [An Interdisciplinary Approach to Learning Music]

Through my eclectic educational record, I possess diverse knowledge regarding piano curricula, music pedagogy and general lesson materials. Coupled with my higher education background honing various music notation software, I can create tailored resources which are suitable, beneficial and unique to each and every learner. As mentioned previously, I am technically proficient in a range of music disciplines, evidenced by my ABRSM qualifications.

During the first lesson, I facilitate an informal discussion with the student, concretising milestones (short-term) and goals (long-term). During this conversation, I pay close attention to the student’s implied motivations for learning, communication style and needs. Depending on what we have co-decided, I document the outcome so that I am able to more accurately monitor a students’ progress throughout the course of our lessons. Each lesson is unique and no two sessions are the same, however, I ensure that they all consist of in-depth rudimentary practice in the form of interactive, engaging and personalised activities. No matter the age, level or support needs – I always make sure to teach well-established practice habits, so that students’ gradually become able to monitor, regulate and take full responsibility for their own learning.

ASN (Additional Support Needs) Support

Through my extensive experience supporting ASN individuals in a varied range of learning environments, I have acquired proven success at implementing innovative solutions for students with significant barriers to learning. During my time at secondary school, I was recruited by the SfL (Support for Learning) department to work as a volunteer. In my private practice, around 50% of my students have Additional Support Needs (e.g. Down’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, etc.) Regarding my private tutoring, I deploy a range of strategies such as redirection, gamification and cycling through several impactful activities which activate preferred modalities to maintain focus. In reference to my specialised training, I am also able to teach music literacy by eliciting pre-existing known concepts to combine with new musical concepts as well as gauging which music notation systems are more likely to be understood by the individual.(e.g. Figurenotes: designed to help students with learning disabilities play music) If you or your child has ASN and is interested in learning piano or violin, please get in touch by sending a short profile on the learner.
