Tutor Decision Survey: Cover Tutor Payment Policy
At Bishopbriggs School of Music, we believe in a collaborative and democratic approach to key decisions that affect our teaching team. As part of this, we’re inviting all tutors to participate in a vote regarding our cover tutor payment policy. The decision will be made using a first-past-the-post system — the option receiving the most votes will become our policy moving forward.
The Context:
If you take a holiday outside the Music School’s set holiday dates and ask a Cover Tutor to take your place, do you think the Cover Tutor should be paid for the number of students originally agreed, even if some students later use a cover lesson and do not attend the day of the Cover Tutor teaching?
For example:
You arrange for a Cover Tutor to teach 10 students. In the days before the cover date, 4 of those students request to use a cover lesson (with more than 24 hours’ notice), so they will not attend the lesson on that day the Cover Tutor is covering.

Should the Cover Tutor still be paid for the full 10 students originally agreed, even if only 6 attend? This would result in the regular tutor needing to teach the rescheduled cover lessons unpaid at a later date.

Please note: Only one tutor can be paid per student lesson. There is no double payment to pay both.

We're now asking for your view on the following two options:

YES: The cover tutor should be paid for the full agreed schedule, regardless of student cancellations with 24hrs notice. Any student requesting a cover within 24 hours of their lesson would be taught via an ‘Unpaid-Cover Lesson’ by the regular tutor.
NO: The cover tutor should only be paid for the actual number of lessons delivered on the day, regardless of how many were originally agreed.
Please select your preferred option below, fill in your name, and tick the digital signature box. This form must be completed by all tutors by Friday 9th May at 7:00 PM. Once all responses are received, we will share the final decision — but not the individual choices/names of respondents.
Thank you for your input — your voice matters.
